1810: Death of An Earl

12May1810-Dear Diary-I have gotten only two letters from Papa in the recent months. That is worrisome to both Mama and myself. We have been hearing that the war has escalated, and the King is asking for more men to join the fight. This places us in deep peril, as we are becoming short of men to work the lands. I fear that the women will have to pick up the slack. Mama has taken to riding out to visit every few days and provide what help she can to our tenants. This is causing her to be even more tired, developing almost daily headaches which she does not need. I have started traveling with her and have even offered to help with the animals and fields. Mama says that is not becoming of me, but there are so much work and so few people to do it. It is the least I can do. And I am making friends and learning so much. I think Papa would be proud of me. He always has said that an Earl and his family needs to take care of their people to ensure good crops and steady income for all. I can see now how important it is to be responsible and reliable. He has taught me this while being so far away. He is a remarkable man and I love him so much. I hope to see him soon. Surely, the King will only require a year of his services. That has already been completed. He will be coming in the door very soon and Mama will be happy and well again. I look forward to that day. Well, Goodnight, dear Diary. Until tomorrow, Lavinia.

The following week, the Estate got an unexpected visitor. Lavinia was called from her lessons early one afternoon with instructions to go tidy up before coming downstairs. She did as she was told, even changing to a more appropriate outfit than the one she had donned that morning for her lessons. She was very pleased with that decision, for as she made her way downstairs to the Drawing room, she heard a familiar voice from the not-so-distant past.

Just as she suspected, Aaron Winston was standing in front of the fireplace, his arm propped on the mantel, looking relaxed and in his element as he spoke to Patricia. As Lavinia entered the room, Aaron stopped talking and turned in her direction, drinking her in with those striking green eyes, a big grin lighting his face. He crossed over to her and took her hand in his, bowed and kissed it lightly.

“Lavinia, it is such a pleasure to see you again. I was just telling Lady Whitfield how the court has been so dull without you charming ladies to grace it. I trust you have been well since last we spoke?” The look in his eyes said far more than those few words. Lavinia felt her breath tighten in her chest. After almost a year, he still takes my breath away.
